Global Music

This course will present some of the basic tenets and cultivate foundational aspects of non-Indian, global music.  Taught by a musicologist and a practicing musician, the classes strike a balance between the academic and the performative.  The scholastic portion will delve into ethnomusicology, history, soundcraft and listening, sampling diverse genres of music from around the globe. The practical portion will build on  the basics of western vocal technique and explore the body as an instrument in individual and group contexts. It is assumed that the student will participate in  formal/informal performance occasions envisioned by the professors.
