When India became independent, it was one of the few countries of the global South with a robust business class and a sizeable private sector. Did this class emerge because of colonialism or despite it? What has been role of businesses in India’s capitalist development and politics? Why are Indian businesspeople from certain communities that hail from the arid parts of South Asia? And what has been the relationship between entrepreneurship, caste, class, community, and gender in India? With these questions in mind, this course will introduce students to the main themes and issues in Indian business history from 1600 to the present. This course will equip students with a firm understanding of the long- term patterns of changes and continuity in Indian business landscape; enable them to make better sense of what is new and what is not about Indian private sector today; and help them critically analyze the discourse on and by businesses in modern India.
