The Craft of Writing is 200 level course required for the completion of the Creative Writing minor. A student needs to complete one Craft of Writing course to satisfy their minor requirement.
The Craft of Writing: The Short Story
In this course, students will experiment with the genre of the short story as a means of developing different imaginative approaches to experience. Using a workshop format, students will learn craft through close readings of each other’s work and prescribed short stories. The emphasis will be on generating raw material, and advancing a chunk of this work toward completion. During the semester, we will discuss a set of craft elements and students will be expected to apply those craft elements in their own writing and also while critiquing the work of their classmates. In short, this course will teach students the basic techniques of short fiction, how to apply those in their own writing and, more generally, how to look at literature from the practitioner’s point of view.
