Dear All,
The Department of Visual Arts is delighted to invite you to the third talk in the Visual Arts Colloquium Series, Monsoon 2026.
Title of the Talk: From Paddy Fields to Proscenium to Public Space: Exploring Pedagogy as a Tool of Specific Art Engagement
Speaker: Professor Sanchayan Ghosh, Educator & Artist
Date & Time: Friday, 23rd October, 2026, at 1:30 PM
Venue: Visual Arts Studio (near sports block)
Abstract:
Public Art has evolved from its colonial inheritance of monuments to process based individual and collective engagements with specific sites. Site-specific art today is a form of direct engagement with different forms of institutions, configuring multiple layers of ownership and power. In the process of creating a site-specific form, Sanchayan Ghosh enables pedagogical frameworks of learning as essential tools to shape a critical public sphere. Site-specific engagements also emerge trans-disciplinary forms of practice where collaborations and collective transformations produce relational dialogues between the auteur and the viewer. In this presentation Sanchayan Ghosh will share his experiences with various kinds of social and institutional spaces in the creation of site-specific art.
About the Speaker:
Sanchayan Ghosh is an artist whose practice centers on process-based, site-specific work and post-performance collaborative art. Inspired early on by community ritual events in Santiniketan and his workshops with Third Theatre exponent Badal Sarkar, he sees making and sharing as one integrated process. He engages diverse communities through workshops that become interactive, participatory art activities, shared in both private and public spaces. These lead to interdisciplinary, multi-layered installations and performances that are both pedagogic and performative. Through this work, Ghosh continues to explore the space between institution and pedagogy, and the interface of institutional and public situations.
We look forward to having you with us for the talk.
Warm regards,
Visual Arts Department
