Title: I USED TO BE A MOUNTAIN…SHAPED LIKE A RIVER!
An Unchronological Journey Through Mediums, Encounters, and Radical Hospitality

Artist bio: 

Mithu Sen’s artistic practice reflects on and critiques social norms and institutional authority through ideas of radical hospitality and “perpetual unbecoming,” resisting fixed identities and scripted structures. Working across conceptual and multidisciplinary forms, she employs playful yet provocative interventions to reconsider questions of identity, language, and belonging while engaging with systems of power. Through counter-narratives and speculative gestures, she seeks to unsettle societal conventions, linguistic hierarchies, and fixed modes of meaning.

Her practice has traversed continents, inhabiting biennales, museums, galleries, and experimental platforms. She has exhibited and performed at Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin; Sharjah Biennale 15, Sharjah; APT9 – 9th Asia Pacific Triennial, Australia; Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, Germany; Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, India; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Art Unlimited, Art Basel; Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum, USA; Kochi-Muziris Biennale; Dhaka Art Summit; Tate Modern, London; Zacheta National Gallery of Art, Warsaw; and National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, among others.

In 2023, she presented her mid-career survey exhibition mOTHERTONGUE at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art. Her monograph, Unmyth: Works and Worlds of Mithu Sen, was published in 2025. She is the recipient of several awards, including the Škoda Prize and the Prudential Eye Award for Contemporary Asian Art – Drawing. Sen lives and works in New Delhi.
