Abstract:

If two Hermitian operators are close to each other, how far apart can their eigenvectors be? This is a question of fundamental importance in physics and in computational mathematics. We will discuss some answers. This talk is a tribute to Chandler Davis (1926-2022), a pioneer in this subject, from whom I learnt much.
