Dear All,
The Department of Physics invites you to a seminar on "J0237−0105: A giant radio galaxy showing four episodes of jet activity"
Abstract: We present a study of the structure of the radio source J0237−0105 using data from the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (near Pune), MeerKAT (S. Africa) and the VLASS (USA). This radio source inhabits a galaxy cluster at redshift 0.372 and is a giant radio galaxy spanning over 1.3 Mpc in linear size. It also has the S-shaped morphology associated with precessing black-holes in the active nucleus. Most remarkably, there is evidence that this source is currently in its fourth episode of radio jet activity, the only such source known till date. I will discuss these observations in the context of our current understanding of the physics of extra-galatic radio sources.
About the Speaker: Dr. Ramana Athreya is an Astronomer and Ecologist at IISER, Pune. After his PhD at NCRA-TIFR and postdoctoral work at IAP, Paris and ESO, Chile, he worked as an Astronomer at NCRA, while pursuing ornithology in his spare time. In 2009 he joined as a faculty member in both Physics and Biology at IISER, Pune, where he now runs a Molecular Ecology lab, contributes to Biodiversity and Conservation and also works on various Astronomical problems including galaxies, galaxy clusters, pulsars and high sensitivity radio imaging.
We look forward to your active participation.
