Stable multiplicities in the representation theory of symmetric groups.

Mathematics Colloquium | Shraddha Srivastava | Feb 7th, 2023

  • This event has passed.

Abstract:

A fundamental question in the representation theory of the symmetric group S_n is to determine the multiplicity of an irreducible representation of S_n in a given representation of S_n. Many interesting representations of S_n, for each n, fit into a natural sequence such that multiplicities of irreducible representations exhibit a stability phenomenon along the sequence.

We will discuss concrete results on stable multiplicities for sequences arising from restricting (some) Weyl representations of the general linear group to the subgroup of permutation matrices (based on joint work with Sridhar Narayanan, Digjoy Paul, and Amritanshu Prasad). We will also address a result on stable multiplicities for sequences arising from tensor products of irreducible representations of the symmetric group (based on joint work with Volodymyr Mazorchuk).
