Abstract: Painting and photography have had a long and mutually constitutive history, in terms of aesthetics and formal preoccupations. This presentation will delve into Sathyanand Mohan's practice, situated at the intersection of these two mediums. Sathyanand Mohan is an artist and higher education teacher of contemporary photography. Through a discussion on a few images from his oeuvre, the talk will touch upon the history of mutual symbiosis between the two media forms and how these histories inform Sathyanand's practice.

Sathyanand Mohan is currently pursuing his Doctoral Research at the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT-B, Mumbai. He is a Faculty at Contemporary Art Practices Program at Srishti-Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Bengaluru. Apart from various group exhibitions, Sathyanand Mohan has held two solo exhibitions in Mumbai; Mirage (The Guild Art Gallery, Mumbai, 2012) and Reliquary (The Guild Art Gallery, Mumbai, 2009). He has curated the show Futures Present (Gallery White, Vadodara in 2018) and has written a number of essays and articles on Contemporary Indian artists and art. Sathyanand Mohan was the recipient of the Foundation for Indian Contemporary Art Writing Award in the year 2009.  (His select group exhibitions include: Text Matters, The Guild Alibaug, 2019; The Work of Art: Iteration in Multiples, Fragments and Reflection, The Guild, 2015; Reading Room, an exhibition on Book Art curated by Amit Jain for Blueprint 12, at SaffronArt, New York, 2016; Reading Room, curated by Amit Jain for Blueprint 12, in conjunction with Colombo Biennale, 2014, Alliance Francaise, New Delhi, in April 2014, later exhibited at TARQ Art Gallery Mumbai in September 2014, and then at the Kochi-Muziris Biennale as part of the collateral events at Yousouf Art Gallery, Jew Town, Mattancherry in December 2014; Traces: Works in Progress, a two-person show as part of a collaborative project with  Kate Copeland at Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA), Portland, February, 2014; Chennai Art Summit, February 2014; Hong Kong Art Fair May 2012; The Secret Life of Plants, curated by Maya Kovaskaya for Exhibit 320 Gallery, Delhi, August 2012; ARTSlant Singapore (Art Fair) January 2011 and Alternate to Another, The Guild Art USA Inc., New York, 2010.)
