Growing with Ashoka: A Personal Tale of Development and Discovery

Shruti Bajaj, YIF staff at Ashoka University, reflects on her enriching journey of growth and the transformative impact of fostering a vibrant, diverse, and intellectually stimulating community

I was drawn to Ashoka University because of its vibrant community and its commitment to fostering dialogue, knowledge, growth, and self-awareness during such crucial years in students’ lives. Universities should be spaces where curiosity is encouraged, and Ashoka excels at this. Being part of a community that shapes responsible leaders for India and the world is what made me choose Ashoka. The prospect of contributing to and growing within such an environment was incredibly appealing.

Working at Ashoka has been a personal journey of growth and self-reflection in my late 20s. It has significantly changed the way I think, communicate, and approach education. The exposure to new ideas and perspectives has forced me to think differently and reassess my beliefs.

In countless moments here, I learn something new about human behaviour. Attending classes and interacting with our faculty, external partner organisations, mentors, and guest speakers have given me great insights into the global anticipation for students equipped with a liberal arts education. The experience has been profoundly enriching and has contributed immensely to my personal and professional development.

Some of my most vivid memories at Ashoka are my interactions with the Young India Fellows. I recall the excitement and potential during the initial months of orientation and the pride and accomplishment on Convocation Day. The most gratifying part of my job is witnessing the transformation of these students. What makes Ashoka stand out is its focus on all types of diversity in the classroom—diversity of students, pedagogy, and course curriculum.

In the next ten years, I see Ashoka as a leading institution both in India and globally, known for its excellence in liberal arts and sciences. It will continue to be a place where interdisciplinary education thrives, producing graduates who are not only academically accomplished but also socially responsible and innovative leaders. Ashoka will be a space where education truly blooms, not just imparting knowledge but also creating it.
