#MyAshokaStory: A Journey of Hope and Discovery at Ashoka University

“I’m Sona J, currently enrolled in the MSc Biology program at Ashoka University. I completed my Undergraduate in Biology at Ashoka.

Coming from a remote village in Kerala, I never imagined that the opportunity to be part of Ashoka University would come knocking at my door. When the opportunity finally came, it made me incredibly happy and thankful. My parents were excited too and wanted me to take it. However, the heavy burden of financial constraints clouded our hopes, and then the possibility of joining Ashoka seemed like a dream slipping away. It was at this moment that Ashoka’s financial aid emerged as a beam of hope, enlightening the path toward realising my dreams.

The transition to Ashoka University was a blend of emotions, overwhelming me with a mix of excitement, nervousness, and curiosity on my very first day. The vibrant campus, diverse student body, and interdisciplinary approach captivated me and drove me through different phases of life. From the inception of critical thinking to the evolution of a biology major, each twist and turn has taught me valuable lessons. Delving into the interdisciplinary curriculum, Ashoka lit my path toward a master’s in biology, igniting within me a keen passion for research.

Moreover, the opportunity to serve as a Resident Assistant during the Ashoka Scholars Program provided me with a sense of fulfilment and an enriching experience. It was a chance to give back to the community that had played such a pivotal role in shaping me into the person I am today.

Each moment, every encounter, and every space at Ashoka became a classroom for my self-discovery. It is a journey of transformation, from a hesitant newcomer to a realm of enlightenment and realisation, through a process of learning, unlearning, and evolving.

As Ashoka marks its 10th anniversary, I’m filled with pride and gratitude to be part of this milestone. The university’s dedication to excellence sets the stage for future success. Looking ahead, I see Ashoka thriving as an inspiration for liberal arts education, shaping thoughtful, engaged citizens.

For its 20th anniversary, I’d include not just objects but the intangible spirit of inquiry, student community, faculty dedication, and social responsibility in a time capsule, capturing Ashoka’s essence and aspirations.”
