With over two decades of experience bridging medicine, informatics, and technology, he has pioneered initiatives transforming how healthcare systems leverage data, digital tools, and AI to improve patient outcomes and equity.
He currently serves as Chief Digital Health Officer and CIO Emeritus at UC Davis Health, where he led California’s first health system to achieve “Most Wired Level 10” digital maturity and launched multiple AI governance and innovation programs, including the VALID AI collective, a national network of 50 health systems focused on ethical and evidence-based AI transformation. Prior to UC Davis, Dr Atreja was Chief Innovation Officer at the Mount Sinai Health System, New York, where he founded the Sinai AppLab—a leading academic digital medicine lab—and co-founded NODE.Health, a consortium advancing evidence-based digital transformation.
Dr Atreja earned his MBBS from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), an MPH from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and trained in Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, and Clinical Informatics at the Cleveland Clinic. A former NIH-funded investigator and award-winning educator, he has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers and holds multiple U.S. patents for digital health innovations.
