PhD in Sociology and Anthropology

Bupinder Singh Bali is a PhD candidate in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Ashoka University. He spent over a decade teaching in government schools across Kashmir before joining Ashoka, and that work shaped the questions he now studies: how small religious minorities build ethical life, livelihood, and educational hope inside decades of insecurity.

His first book, Those Who Stayed: The Sikhs of Kashmir (Amaryllis, 2024), is the first book length study of Kashmir’s Sikh community. It grew directly from years spent close to Sikh families, gurudwaras, and the daily work of staying through thirty years of conflict. An article drawn from this research, on education as a form of everyday repair among Kashmiri Sikhs, is under review at Asian Ethnicity. Two related papers are available as preprints on SocArXiv and Preprints.org: one traces the ethics of staying and slow migration, the other looks at Sikh gift giving as a form of moral economy. A second book, co-authored with Indupriya B. and titled Raped: History, Politics and Psychology of Rapes in Independent India, is forthcoming from Amaryllis in 2027.

His writing has appeared in The Wire, Outlook India, The India Forum, and The Delacorte Review. He has presented at the World Conference on Criminology 2025, the International Symposium on Plato 2025, and NACIACP 2026.
