Debayan Gupta

Debayan Gupta is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Ashoka University, focusing on machine learning, secure computation, and privacy.

Before coming to Ashoka, Debayan held an Extraordinary Faculty position in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT, where he taught courses like 6.042, 6.006, and 6.046. He has a PhD from Yale and a bachelor’s degree from St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata.

Debayan has worked extensively in both cryptography and machine learning theory, as well as applications. He also has a deep interest in policy and ethics, and as such, has worked with both NGOs and governments (primarily the Indian MEITy) on these areas. His work has been supported by a wide range of grants: government grants (such as the ANRF Advanced Research Grant, the United States-India Science & Technology Endowment Fund: Critical and Emerging Technology Grant, etc.), non-profit grants (such as the Mozilla Responsible Computing Challenge, the Johns-Hopkins Breakthrough Research Grant, etc.), and private grants (ranging from corporations such as WhatsApp, to individual donors such as Rishi Khanna).
