Lalita Sharma

Postdoctoral Fellow, Political Science, Ashoka University

Lalita works in the domain of moral and political philosophy. Her current research work is on conceptual and normative concerns of academic freedom and values.

Her doctoral dissertation, “Tolerating Hate Speech”, analyses the category of hate speech and argues for a conception of toleration as an appropriate response to “Offensive Speech”, distinguishing the speech which targets beliefs and practices from speech which targets groups and communities.

She worked as a teaching fellow at Ashoka University in the departments of Political Science and Philosophy before joining as a post-doctoral fellow at the department.

She completed her PhD from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi in Philosophy, a Master’s degree in Human Rights and Duties Education from Jamia Millia Islamia, Public Administration from IGNOU, and a Bachelor’s degree in Zoology from Delhi University.

Her work and interests outside academia are in the area of performance practice and community sports/play. She has practised theatre for over twenty years and has worked on purposeful play projects on gender-based violence and sexual health, and theatre for community engagement and awareness-building.
