Professor William McDonald specialises in the history of philosophy with a focus on maverick European thinkers from the 19th and 20th centuries. He is the author of numerous works on the Danish thinker Søren Kierkegaard, including articles in The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy, The Literary Encyclopediaand the Oxford Handbook of Kierkegaard, and is co-editor of books on Kierkegaard’s Concepts and Kierkegaard and Classical Greek Thought. He has published on Socrates, Plato, Hegel, Nietzsche, Heidegger and Foucault as well as in the areas of philosophical psychology, philosophy of technology, philosophy of religion, aesthetics, ethics, comparative philosophy and comparative literature. Professor McDonald has taught at universities in Australia, Denmark, the United Arab Emirates and Kyrgyzstan and has held research fellowships in the Slovak Republic, the USA, and the UK. He has written and produced stage plays and documentary films and dabbles in writing fiction.
