12 March, 2018 | 2 min readDuring the visit of the French President Emmanuel Macron, Ashoka University signed an MoU on behalf of the Trivedi Centre for Political Data (TCPD) with the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), Sciences Po Paris, and the University of Bordeaux on 8th March, 2018. This five-year agreement sets the TCPD as an International Associated Laboratory (LIA), a CNRS label with attached funding. Sciences Po is a founding partner of Ashoka University and the CNRS is the world’s largest public research organisation.
The aim of the project is to build datasets on the profile of Indian legislators and candidates in the Indian elections. The sociology of elected representatives is an entry point to study broader processes of political and democratic transformation in India, as they reflect both the transformation of political parties’ electoral strategies as well as represent a manifestation of popular will. Combined teams of researchers and students from TCPD and Sciences Po will collect and analyse the data. The funds provided by the CNRS will be used for fieldwork to organise two annual events (workshop, seminars or conferences), alternatively in Paris and on Ashoka campus.
