Introduction to Topological insulators:Understanding the ideas of nontrivial electron band structure

  • This event has passed.

Abstract: Topological insulators are a new class of materials that have attracted significant attention in contemporary condensed matter physics. They go beyond the standard symmetry breaking -Landau- paradigm. Here, basic questions, such as whether the material conducts electricity, depend on nonlocal properties called topological invariants. In this regard, we'll make an attempt to understand topological electrons by using a one dimensional concrete model popularly known as the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model. It will lay the foundation for the single particle Hamiltonian, Bulk-Boundary Correspondence, Edge States and Topological Invariants.
