Finding My Path: The Impact of YIF and Ashoka on My Life and Career

I am a mechanical engineering graduate, born and raised in Chennai. For the past five years, I’d been working as a journalist, most recently for the Hindu BusinessLine. While I enjoyed my work, I began seeking opportunities beyond journalism, hoping to explore new fields and challenges. During my search for media-related fellowships, I stumbled upon the Young India Fellowship (YIF) at Ashoka University. I had heard about this programme a few years ago but didn’t pursue it at the time due to concerns about finances. Once I discovered the financial aid provided by Ashoka, I decided to give it a shot. I strongly felt that YIF would provide the career pivot I was looking for.

YIF’s multidisciplinary approach has significantly broadened my perspective. The diverse reading materials and access to top-notch professors, and experts in their fields, were a stark contrast to my engineering days. Learning from my talented and diverse batchmates has also been incredibly enriching. Through YIF, I have become a better communicator, learned the art of listening, been exposed to various academic perspectives, and developed critical thinking skills. These experiences have profoundly contributed to my personal growth and prepared me for future endeavours.

One thing I absolutely love about Ashoka is the campus, particularly the YIF floor in Academic Building 2. The facilities are amazing, and the environment here is conducive to both learning and personal reflection, making it a place I’ll miss dearly.

Ashoka isn’t just about academics. I’ve had the privilege of attending guest speaker sessions like the Alumni in Residence and the Crossover Series. The various cultural events organised by undergraduates throughout the year have also been a highlight. Moreover, playing sports like badminton with fellow YIF members and cycling around the campus has been a delightful experience. These activities have enriched my time at Ashoka beyond measure.

As Ashoka celebrates its 10th anniversary, it’s remarkable how the university has evolved. Ashoka’s commitment to offering the best liberal arts education in India has only strengthened over the years. The university’s focus on inviting faculty of great repute has significantly boosted its credibility and growth. I believe Ashoka’s dedication to its mission has been instrumental in its evolution and success.

My journey at Ashoka has been exceptionally transformative. The experiences and knowledge I’ve gained here will stay with me forever, guiding me in my future endeavours.
