Soumya Vats

Soumya Vats holds an MA in Film and Media Studies from the School of the Arts at Columbia University. Her Master’s thesis examines censorship and gender in the transnational streaming series A Suitable Boy. Her research interests include popular culture, media industries, diaspora cinema, and OTT streaming. She has a background in literature and experience working with nonprofit cultural organisations in Delhi and New York. She has also worked in content testing in Mumbai, focusing on the shifting trends in audience engagement.

Soumya recently worked as a Visiting Faculty member at National Law School of India University (NLSIU) Bengaluru, where she taught a course on “Horror Cinema as Social Commentary: A Critical Writing Approach to Popular Culture”. A media enthusiast, she is often found shifting from podcasts to documentaries to sitcoms when she is not already at the movies.
