Ashoka University offers a year-long Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Studies and Research (DipASR) to students who have completed the three-year Bachelor’s Programme, during which students can take a wide range of elective options across a variety of subjects, as well as gain valuable research experience in specific disciplines. Students must complete 32 credits to graduate from the ASP and may choose to complete an advanced major in a particular discipline or may choose to study subjects across disciplines.
Ashoka Scholar’s Programme (ASP) students intending to write a thesis must have taken at least 6 courses offered by, or cross-listed with, EVS. They should also have taken at least one methods course related to their field of interest. Students Intending to writing a Thesis within Environmental Studies may choose one of the following option:
Student writing the thesis in their Minor: The student may write their thesis only in their Minor; however, they will not be eligible for a 4-Year Honors with Research degree. Instead, they will graduate with a 4-Year Honors without Research degree. The thesis completed in the Minor department will still be reflected on the transcript.
Student writing an interdisciplinary thesis within both Major & Minor: In this case, approvals will be required from both Department Heads, as well as both advisors—one from the Major and one from the Minor. The credits of the interdisciplinary thesis will count towards research credits and they will graduate with a 4-Year Honors with Research degree.
Students should identify a potential supervisor by December in Year 3 to discuss thesis prerequisites and draft a research proposal. The preliminary proposal (1000 words) should be submitted by 31 May. The final proposal to be presented at the start of Monsoon term.
The summer between semesters 6 and 7 should be used for preliminary fieldwork.
The research proposal should be defended in August in Year 4.
The final thesis should be no more than 15,000 words and cover 8 credits (4 each
semester). The thesis will be evaluated by the faculty advisor and, potentially, another Ashoka faculty member.
The thesis should be submitted by the beginning of April.
