Biodiversity loss occurring at an unprecedented rate is posing a serious threat to our ecosystem which is essential for human health, food security, and climate resilience. On Day 1 of the conference, we aim to explore different perspectives on how plants and animals respond to environmental shifts, the factors driving these changes, and their implications on our ecosystem and society.
We will focus specifically on the Old World Tropics, which were once part of the ancient land masses like Gondwana and Laurasia. The geological history of these regions led to long periods of evolutionary isolation and a high level of endemism. Understanding the changes in these systems is crucial for predicting future ecosystem dynamics, managing biodiversity, and shaping conservation policies.
