#GraduateStories: Mathematics, Economics, and Everything in Between

“The community here is built to uplift and guide you; make the most of it.”

My six-year journey at Ashoka is truly unforgettable. Here, I immersed myself in various roles and experiences that set the path for my academic and personal growth. Serving as a Resident Assistant (RA) during the Ashoka Scholars Programme was one of the most defining moments for me, as it helped me build confidence, improve my social and leadership skills, and also trained me to handle responsibilities with maturity. Equally significant was my role as a Research Assistant under Professor Aparajita Dasgupta for the past two years. This opportunity ignited my interest in economics and research, introduced me to the world of data and quantitative analysis, and helped me see a clearer path for my future. All these experiences shaped who I am today – more confident, more curious, and more certain of my aspirations.

I began my academic journey at Ashoka as a Mathematics major. The interdisciplinary environment here encouraged me to explore beyond my comfort zone, eventually leading me to Economics. That transition wasn’t easy – there were moments of struggle and self-doubt, but the support I received from peers and professors allowed me to learn from scratch and grow into a more well-rounded thinker.

Professor Aparajita Dasgupta had a major impact on my academic journey at Ashoka. Her constant support and belief in me, especially during times when I struggled, kept me going. She created a space where I could learn from my mistakes and restart whenever I faltered.

My advice to new Ashokans is this: Don’t hesitate to step outside your comfort zone. Some of the most meaningful connections and experiences come when you take that leap, whether it’s signing up for a course in an unfamiliar discipline or applying for a leadership role. Find a support system, be open to learning from failure, and remember that growth often comes from challenges. The community here is built to uplift and guide you; make the most of it.
