Mental Health Advocacy through Art at the India Art Fair

Nine Ashoka students from diverse nationalities, income groups, genders were a part of a residential project of self-exploration and inner work across five days at Sanskriti, Anandgram in Delhi in the month of February 2020.

The workshop, led by Arvinder Singh and planned in collaboration with Red Balloon and Sumant Jaykrishnan aimed at initiating conversations around mental health amongst the youth. The students’ experience, under the guidance of designer Sumant Jaykrishnan, culminated into an interactive public art installation, ‘Moving Out to Go Within’ which was displayed at STIR Gallery from February 2 to April 15 as a part of the India Art Fair inaugural exhibition. This initiative was very well appreciated as an innovative and one of its kind model to encourage and normalise conversations around mental health in the larger society.

International Conference in collaboration with Cambridge University

A significant achievement for the centre has been successfully securing a grant from Cambridge University for collaboration, conference, and research titled ‘The Past, Present and Future of the Psych-Clinic: Global Perspectives’. This conference which was scheduled to be in December 2020 has now been rescheduled (owing to the pandemic) for the summer of 2021.

This research collaboration between Cambridge University and Ashoka University is motivated by the need to address the increasingly urgent global and Indian issue of mental health, and to place these questions in relation to psychotherapeutic and social science perspectives on psychic life. This collaboration will create a unique flagship network in which anthropologists and historians will be in dialogue with clinical practitioners to address what is increasingly coming to be recognised as a mental health crisis in India.

This initiative and partnership between Dr. Arvinder Singh and Dr. Bhrigupati Singh at Ashoka University with Dr. Shruti Kapila at Cambridge University will create a unique and flagship network between scholars and practitioners across India, Cambridge, and the wider world of mental health, illness, and wellness that have come to be recognised as increasingly critical issues worldwide.

It would be important to point out that ours was the only collaboration that received a grant in these difficult times when most universities are facing financial difficulties.

Live Sessions

ACWB and The Hindu came together on World Mental Health Day, 2020. With online classes, separation from friends, and placement worries in a spiralling economy, young adults today face a whole new set of challenges. In a Live session with Arvinder J Singh, Director, Ashoka Centre for Well-Being (@acwb_ashoka), there was a discussion on the importance of mental health in the 15-25 age group.
