Additional Support for Students with Disabilities

  • Assessments: The office employs an interactive process to consult with the student and any necessary stakeholders to conduct an individualized needs assessment for each student. This assessment helps to determine the appropriate accommodations that should be provided to the student. The only support center in India collaborating with professionals who provide assessment services and intervention plans for individuals with various disabilities such as learning disabilities (LD), physical disabilities (PD), and others.
  • Content Converters: At the Office of Learning Support, student content remediators are essential in manually remedying educational materials to ensure the accessibility of course material for students with visual impairment. Their role involves converting and editing documents, recording audio material, and working closely with students with visual impairment. This plays a crucial role in advocating for inclusive practices in curriculum across campus, ultimately fostering an environment where every student has equal access to educational resources.
  • Campus Buddies: For new students with visual impairment who join Ashoka, academic campus navigation forms the major areas of initial support. On a needs basis, a system of helpers, as well as student campus buddies help the new joinees navigate the campus, not just in the physical sense, but socially as well. The support system requires close collaborations and regular feedback from the students.
  • Note Takers: Notetakers are selected to assist students who may face challenges in taking notes in class owing to challenges related to limb mobility or other physical needs. These notetakers collaborate closely with the Office and the students they take notes for, facilitating a seamless and inclusive classroom experience for them.
